While we are almost ready to step into the new year, 2017 still has some aces in the sleeve for the logistics industry. This year, in a nutshell, was a year of non-logistics players entering the industry through innovations. For example, in May Uber officially announced the launch of Uber Freight to tackle the logistics market, Alphabet’s autonomous car unit Waymo brought the power of driverless driving to trucks and just this month Tesla presented its Semi Truck with specs that are beyond industry’s standard. The only way for the industry players to respond to such rivalry is to invest time and resources in new technologies like UPS did while exploring the blockchain. The shift in logistics is happening. The question is, as a logistics player, are you doing anything about it? As one famous Chinese proverb says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

As any other industry, in order to move forward, the logistics sector has to face the new challenges and find the ways to overcome them. With an increasing customer demand for products and services, logistics players have to be agile and think out of the box. If such questions as “What can we do to help postal workers operate more efficiently in the cities?” or “How can we optimize the last mile delivery?” are on the discussion board, then companies need to look for help in the realm of latest technology. Consequently, we can increase the efficiency of postal workers by accompanying them with the robots and optimize last mile delivery by giving access to such tools as the innovative location delivery system and autonomous vehicles. It is true that the number of challenges for the industry is increasing year-to-year. However, the amount and the quality of solutions are increasing as well, thus the logistics players should constantly scan the market for new ones and not to be afraid to test them. Perhaps, that is the way to become a top-notch service provider in the 21st century.

Logistics connects the world through complex delivery networks, Innovation unites the globe by bringing the power of technology to its every corner. While we are reading the news about IoT application at the Chinese manufacturing sites, Switzerland is testing drone delivery networks to service their healthcare systems. And while the government and retail businesses are collaborating to decrease traffic and pollution in British cities, more and more players appear in the US electric semi truck market creating an environment for healthy competition. The logistics industry of every country has its specifics. We should explore and study successful local innovations because everything local has the potential to become global.
